Philippa, my wife was told in her job (in HR no less) that she was not
allowed to wear trousers to work, she must wear a skirt, she actually
thought it was a wind up at first, thinking what a weird joke, but it
was indeed no joke.
I wish I could say I hadnt experienced this, but no, I was asked by
some way highup d00d "Why dont you wear skirts, the other women do"
followed by the HR guy saying at my monthly review "You must wear
skirts, you mustnt wear trouser suits"...
Yeah, so practical when you often find yourself sitting on the floor
with PCs trying to fix them, or, your head under a desk.... Oh and
relevant is the fact I cant kneel or crouch for very long as I broke my
leg exceedingly badly and well my button wont touch my foot and its
very painful in these positions and also prevents all {*word*76}flow to my
foot.. in a very short space of time.

She was also told to screen out "asian's" (in the
UK this typically refer's to the Far East i.e. Indians, Pakastani's
etc rather than south east asia) who had applied for a junior accounts
clerk, her idiot boss tried to make a joke of it, when he saw her
expression and said "Asian girls are too pretty, I'd be distracted
all day", I sometimes used to think that the Character David Brent
from the office was based on this guy.
SHEESH!
Ok thats bad.
I have heard people say similar. Along the lines of "Women should be in
the bedroom or the kitchen and not anywhere else" stuff like that.

please do not think, that I think that all English are sexist and / or
racist, because I don't think that, just that I have never come across
so much of it business before in my life.
I think the difference here is that a much larger part of our
population seems to get away with propogating such rediculous practices
and comments, despite there being legal stuff to prevent them, in the
end, if some high level manager makes a very sexist comment, who is
worth more to the company, chances are its the manager (even if he is
completely useless according to anyone and everyone who ever worked for
him) vs some lower level employee..
One company I worked for, one director had pretty much bedded most of
the available women... (bar me) .. it was always "Overlooked" when his
latest conquest got promoted.. of course.. it was the only way a child
could have got to run purchasing when she cost the company more than
any other employee due to being exceedingly incompetant.
