best way to save data to binary files

I need to save data from custom classes to a binary files a lot like
the MFC serialization. Data includes fixed size variables
as well as strings. What is the best way to do this?

I have looked at TFileStream but there are a few things
about it I don't like. Any Delphi books out there embellish
on the TFileStream to make it more like object serialization?

Any other recommendations?
