D4 Pro vs D5 Pro

I have not used D5 Pro yet. Is there a compelling reason to upgrade
aside from being the latest version? What kind of
improvements/enhancements are there in D5 Pro? I'm thinking about
upgrading.

Thanks.

Not at this time.  I believe D6 is around the corner.  Wait for that! :)

Re:D4 Pro vs D5 Pro

The Borland website (http://www.borland.com/delphi/whatsnew.html) contains a
good list of improvements. For me, none of them are a good reason to
upgrade...

I was about to buy (new user) D5 but I might as well wait for D6??? Is it 2
weeks, 2 months? Any sites have BETA review?

I hope somebody will reply to this with a little info!  The new release
really can't be too far away.  Borland normally release new versions every
12-14 months and that's why I'm figuring the time is near.

It really would be a shame if you got D5 only for D6 to be released (you'd
be kicking yourself all year), but saying that - I got Delphi 2 two months
before Delphi 3 came out and got Delphi 3 free (when I phoned to moan).

It might be worth ringing your nearest Inprise centre and asking. :)

Best regards

Re:D4 Pro vs D5 Pro

About the main "improvements" in D5 that I do use often is the overloading
of functions and the TObjectList, TStack, TQueue etc "containers" (yes, I
know that I could have done them myself, but its nice when someone else has
already produced them).
Neither of these improvements really justify the cost of the upgrade
(although I do get Educational pricing which made it a reasonable price for
D5 Pro).

True True True! Why buy a used 2000 car (<g>) when the 2001 models are on
the way.

Actually, I am interested to know if D6 is going to be worth waiting for or
not. I upgraded from VB3 to 4 to 5. VB4 was not worth it and I did not goto
VB6 since nothing really changed that I used.

Because it beats walking 20 miles to work.

I believe the Inprise policy (don't quote me on this) is that if you buy the
product within 90 days of an upgrade release then you get that new version
for free (less shipping I believe).  That's what happened to me with Delphi
3.  Bought it in April of 1998, and Delphi 4 came out in like June or
something and I called up and they sent D4 to me for 10 bucks (shipping).

I have a feeling D6 is quite a ways off (i.e. months).  I think we're going
to see Kylix released late summer/early fall, then a few months later D6 for
Windows.  This is just my opinion from reading stuff on the newsgroups &
websites.

hth,
Brian

Sounds good but I would hate to be on the 91st day <g>

Someone needs to seriously start reading articles on Borland's website and
the newsgroups.
Kylix in brief is Delphi for Linux.   Goto the community section on
http://www.borland.com to find out more.

I do look at all the newsgroups but have not read about Kylix. Had no
reason to seek it out at Borland. I have searched for D6 beta etc and have
found nothing.

Currently, the best source for information on Kylix and Delphi 6 is
http://www.drbob42.com/kylix / http://www.drbob42.com/delphi.

Great site! As a newbie I think there is a lot of good info there. However,
I found nothing on D6.

There are no websites with anything about Delphi 6 out there right now. (as
far as I know)

As I said before, Kylix is first then D6 will come down the line.  My
opinion is it's a ways off (i.e. months at least).
