Interbase strings and unusual ascii characters

I have to store japanese shift jis strings in an interbase database.
Works great with ISQL but both reading and writing via BDE results in
a "cannot transliterate between character sets" error.
Does anyone know the correct combination of
character set for the datafield, BDE language driver and NAMES
setting? - if it works anyhow.
