There is no question in my mind (having used Delphi 7, 2005, and 2006):
you should buy BDS 2006 even if you're only doing Win32 development.
The issues that have been reported really are minor issues compared to
prior releases.
Cheers,

Argh. Whatever they do they do it wrong, right? If they wouldn't have put it
out now, would you've argued the other way around?

Sorry, nothing personal but it is really boring to see constantly someone
criticizing ...
Constantly? it is the first time I have put my concerns (note "concern"
not "criticism")
fwiw, I find it boring to see constantly people selectively quoting out
of context

I'm glad at least some people got the point of my post and didn't focus
on the pre-amble.
Thanks for the contribution. Appreciated.

From the download page "This update completes the functionality of the
Preview Technology for C++ and C in Borland Developer Studio 2006."
I didn't go to the download page - why would I? I don't _have_ BDS2006
- that is the point! All I had to go on was a post in the ng that an
Update was available.
And be fair - I did ask whether the update contained any fixes or not!
I didn't make any assumptions either way. I just laid out the things
that had raised the doubts leading to the question that I then asked -
to upgrade or not to upgrade.
I had hoped that people in a position to do so from experience, would
respond to allay my concerns.
I guess I should have known better.

Thanks for that, although Delphi 7 has been absolutely faultless in my

You perhaps forget the C++ part was preview in release, so yes
a fast update should be applauded in this case ?
Fair enough - but it is hard to forget something you didn't know. If I
already had BDS2006 I'd have known C++ was only preview and that an
update was scheduled to address that, and I'd have gone to the
download page and found out that this is what this Update is.
But you may recall that I don't (yet?) have BD2006. That was kind of
the point.
Must remember to turn clairvoyancy on in my NG reader in future!

Re: Borland Developer Studio 2006 Update 1 English is now available

I was using Pro as well. I should mention that I was using CodeRush which
had some major hacks in it and you could never shut down the IDE again without
an AV, so that may have tainted my recollection. Don't get me wrong, D7
was a very good release and was my favorite version up to 2006. I *LIKED*
everything in 2005 but the stability and speed made it very frustrating to
use. 2006 has all the coolest new things, all the speed, and all the stability.
The update adds the C++ update and fixes a few minor things. It installed
perfectly and, so far, I have not noticed it introducing any new issues. I'm
definitely a happy camper right now.

I don't have it yet either, and I am deffinitely not clairvoyant <G>, but
John K (I think) and others have mentioned it in these newsgroups on more
than one occasion.

I don't have BDS2006 yet, but I knew about the C++ preview. Why?
Feature Matrix. I printed it out and inspected it. Wanted to know
which SKU I should get. Ent or Pro? I have Delphi 7 Enterprise.
I decided to give BDS2006 Ent a shot. Mind you, I will be receiving
it after Christmas, so it'll be my Christmas/New Year's and a
very belated Birthday present to boot.
Not to sound offensive or anything; but ignorance isn't an excuse.
Borland's website has had that feature matrix since goodness knows
when. Don't take it as a flame. It isn't.
I would suggest you download and view the feature matrix. Then
get a bib, wear it and start drooling. :) I nearly did. Looking
at the BDS feature matrix is like looking at a fine looking lady.
As for the completion of this metaphor, I will leave it as an
excercise. :)
Dang fine features it has. C++ and Delphi together at last. :)
(Again, no offense intended.)
