Files labeled "Modified" incorrectly.

I'm running StarTeam 4.1 (I know, I need to upgrade but it's not an option today).
The StarTeam client is showing almost all the files I checked out yesterday as "Modified". The files are not modified and if I update the status it does show the correct status. The next time I open StarTeam, the files show as modified again.
This is only happening on my workstation so far. I did see 900 + files on my build machine show as modififed this morning when only about 45 were truly modified so I'm a bit worried that this situation may spread.
I've tried uninstalling the client from my machine. The uninstall is not sufficiently thorough. When I reinstall I still had my servers visible. I uninstalled again, cleaned out the registry and found a variety of files that were left behind and deleted them as well. This appeared to solve the problem yesterday but when I opened up my client today, I again have 8000 "modified" files.
Has anyone seen this sort of behaviour before? Any ideas?
Thanks.
Michele

Re:Files labeled "Modified" incorrectly.

Michele,
What operating system is your client using? Are you using a common
working folder setting for more than one View, Project, etc? Are others
using the same working folder as you?

I'm runing Windows XP. No one else is using the working folders on my workstation. Mose developers, myself included, use the default working folders set in StarTeam.
Each view has it's own directory structure under the main project directory.
i.e. c:\dev\abc (trunk view)
c:\dev\def (branch view)

Re:Files labeled "Modified" incorrectly.

Michele,
Given the fact you are using StarTeam 4.1 on Windows XP, I am
confident in saying that is your problem. When Windows XP first came out,
StarTeam versions 4.x had a lot of problems with everything from status to
simply logging in depending on the version. I would recommend upgrading.
As long as you are on 4.x and on XP there is no telling the strange behavior
you will see.

Re:Files labeled "Modified" incorrectly.

I do recognize that we have an older version but no one else in my company is experiencing this problem and we are all running windows xp. Also I didn't have any problems for the first 7 months after installation.

Re:Files labeled "Modified" incorrectly.

Michele,
The problems with 4.x and Windows XP are random and may not occur
for everyone especially given the fact that XPs security settings and so
forth are highly customizable. The only other thing I can think of is that
your Anti-Virus or some other program is "touching" the file enough to make
StarTeam think the files are being modified when they haven't actually
changed.

Re:Files labeled "Modified" incorrectly.

Michele,
I've read your posts and Jonathan's. I bet that the problem could be found,
eventually, but I also bet that it's a long diagnostic road and not worth
the trouble.
I would recommend that you plan to upgrade to newer starteam asap and live
with the symptom in the meantime. Monitor other users closely so that you
are aware of any other occurrences.
I have a lot of sympathy for your point that "it was working until recently"
and "other users aren't experiencing it". But, I also feel very strongly
that your version of StarTeam is old enough to warrant immediate updating.
So say I anyhow.
Other things you could try....
- Sit with other users and compare techniques, keystroke-for-keystroke
- Scan your workstation aggressively for viruses and spyware that might
touch your files
- Re install starteam on your workstation - see if symptom persists
- Try using a whole other workstation, but your same user id - see if
symptom persists
- Rebuild your entire workstation from the OS up - see if symptom persists

Can be thousands of them, first check viruses and spyware (on both
client and server). Check timestamps. Check backup and antyvirus
systems, maybe they chcnge timestamps on your station.
Try to check difference beetwen files, maybe you see something
interesting.
Try to confirm difference using control sum.
